Children’s Ministry at Findlay St. Church

Bring a child into worship at Findlay St. Christian Church, and she or he will be greeted by many generations of warm smiles. They will be given a place to add their voice to our community, and a home for living and learning the stories of our faith.

Talking About God

We believe that genuinely welcoming our children shows them God’s love even before we begin to talk about it—but we do talk about it too, using an excellent curriculum, Seasons of the Spirit.

Seasons helps us engage them through drama, games, songs, prayer, visual art, and written tools in ways that speak to their lives. It also has tools for helping children connect the Bible stories with what is going on in the world: how Jesus treated the poor and the outcast, how he calls us to love one another (even when we don’t feel like it), how we can help heal the earth, and make the world a more peaceful place. Seasons is theologically consistent with our faith community, which takes the Bible seriously, without taking it literally. Questions from all ages are welcomed and pondered together.

We have also created a separate Bible study for ‘tweens’ and teens, using Eugene Peterson’s The Message. This group meets once a month at the same time as Sunday School, where we discuss Bible stories with a focus on their particular concerns. At this stage of life we feel it is important to show we care for our teens and stay connected with them.

Sharing Our Gifts

Children are eager to share their gifts and make the world a better place. At Findlay we give them opportunities to serve others in many ways, including:

  • Creating hand-painted cards, which are sent out each month to church members on their birthdays
  • Participating in our annual Advent bake sale/fundraiser which has raised funds for:
  • Heifer International
  • Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of King County
  • KUDO, a community-based organization committed to advancing the lives of the rural poor in Malawi, Africa
  • Engaging in a pen-pal program with children in northern Malawi
  • Lending their dramatic skills to our Christmas and Easter plays
  • Making soup for Stone Soup Sunday, our effort to collect canned goods for the Seattle Emergency Food Pantry
  • Singing, playing instruments during worship, and sometimes joining the adult choir in song

We welcome you and your children at Findlay Street Church, and hope you will consider joining us on our journey of faith together!
